Match Report by Niamh Cowdrey

Nairn County approached last night’s match looking to make the semi-finals of the North of Scotland Cup, but unfortunately lost after a tense penalty shootout against local rivals Clachnacuddin.

Starting the match with high energy and chances, Nairn seemed to have the upper hand. Particularly on the left wing, with Andrew Greig making a number of driving runs into the box.

In a particular chance in the 9th minute, County came very close to scoring with a shot from Andrew Greig. The ball was curled towards the far post, though unfortunately went just high of the bar.

It was only 12 minutes later when County scored their first goal of the evening. A free kick met Alister Morrison at the perfect place for him to score via a looping header, which beat the keeper.

County continued to attack throughout the remainder of the first half.

Nairn continued to attack in the second half, and their endeavours were rewarded when Gary Kerr made a superb solo run to the right side of the box before placing the ball inside the far corner to increase Nairn’s lead.

Clach scored their first of the night in the 72nd minute, with a header from James Andersen that just passed the keeper.

An equaliser from Clach came in the 78th minute, with a goal from Connor Bunce. Following a quick break, the ball was crossed to Bunce, who placed it in the right corner.

However, Nairn strived for a winner. A key chance for a final goal came in the 85th minute from Ben Barron. A shot from 18 yards that was just narrowly over.

Despite a great effort from County, there was no winner at full time. And so the match went to penalties, of which Clach won 3-4.

Wayne Mackintosh, Alan Pollock and Matthew Wright all missed from the spot with Dylan Maclean saving two in the shootout.

County will next face Formartine United at Station Park on Saturday 7th September 2024 at 3pm.
