Match Report by Thomas Altheron

It was a sunny day at Station Park for Nairn County’s opening match of the season. While both sides had their fair share of opportunities, it was Brechin City taking all three points.

Brechin City started the match on the front foot with a decent chance, albeit long range, which came to no avail. The next ten minutes went by without any major events. However, in the 17th minute Dayle Robertson put Brechin ahead with a strong header.

The next five minutes was challenging for County as Brechin began to take the front foot. That pressure eventually culminated in goal number two for Brechin after 28 minutes from an Anthony McDonald free kick. This was an unfortunate goal to concede as there was more than a hint of a deflection.

Things almost went from bad to worse as for Nairn as Dayle Robertson struck the ball across the face of the goal but only hitting the post. A couple minutes after, goalkeeper Dylan MacLean had an impressive lowdown save to keep County in the match. Brechin were beginning to play some impressive football with lots of quick passes which led to a cross and a header that floated just over the bar. The referee then blew his whistle for half time.

The second half started how the first half ended with Brechin advancing forward but with little result. The game even started to balance out with County having a few chances themselves. The game though was over as a contest after 56 minutes when Brechin’s Ewan Loudon scored a beautiful header into the bottom left corner for the visitors.

And there was to be little let up for Nairn. In the 64th minute, Dylan MacLean made another important low down save managing to just tip the ball onto the other side of the post. County would go on to trouble the Brechin goal with a very good chance in the 83rd minute which just went over the bar. The full-time whistle soon blew with Brechin City deserved 3-0 winners.

Even though the scoreline wasn’t ideal, there were positives to take away with Dylan MacLean making some amazing saves and Angus Dey putting in a battling performance to earn Man of the Match for The Wee County.
