Nairn County FC was saddened to learn of the recent passing of former club captain, Fred Milne. Mr Milne was a star of the team of the 1950s, who finished as runners up in the 1954/56 North Supplementary Cup after they were defeated by Inverness Thistle over two legs. Progress to this stage of the competition allowed County direct access to the third round of the Scottish Cup though, where they won 3-0 away at Eyemouth United before eventually being eliminated by Berwick Rangers after a replay a Shielfield Park following an epic 5-5 draw at Station Park. To this day, it stands as Nairn's furthest run in the competition. One of Mr Milne's finest moments in a County shirt came when he ended a nine-match losing streak by smashing home a memorable winner in a 2-1 success over Peterhead at Station Park after collecting the ball in his own half in front of the old Cowshed and setting off on a mazy run towards the goal at the Sawmill End. Everyone at the club passes on their condolences to Mr Milne's family. As a mark of respect, the flag will be flown at half-mast during tomorrow's Highland League (Morganti) Cup quarter final tie with Turriff United. Graeme Macleod
