We are delighted to announce that forward Matthew Wright has become our fifth new signing of the summer having left Premiership side Ross County at the end of last season.

Matthew will join us on a two-year contract with the option of a third and will further add to our forward line with Ross Tokely having already secured the services of Ben Barron at the start of the week and Gary Kerr earlier this summer.

The 21-year-old from Stornoway is capable of playing either side of a central striker as well as through the middle himself, giving the Manager a number of potential options for the attacking part of his line-up.

Matthew will link up with his new teammates for the first time at pre-season training tomorrow as we continue preparations for our first friendly match of the summer against St Johnstone on Friday June 28th ahead of the start of the Highland League campaign, which now looks like it will be against Matthew’s former club, Brechin City at Station Park on Saturday August 3rd due to Buckie Thistle’s involvement in both the Premier Sports Cup and the SPFL Trust Trophy.

Matthew follows Alan Pollock and Jonathan Bain as well as Barron and Kerr in becoming the new additions to our squad this close season.

Ross said: “Matthew is a player we have worked really hard to bring to the club, so I am absolutely delighted that it is over the line and he is now going to join us.

“He comes to us with a great pedigree and will add another dimension to our forward line with his pace and finishing ability. I saw that first hand for myself when he played against us for Ross County in pre-season last year.

“I have followed his career closely having seen him play at youth level when I was coaching at Inverness CT. I think he has done well in his loan spells in the Highland League and Scottish Leagues but he has now reached the stage in his career where he is looking for regular football every week at the same club over the course of the next few seasons.

“We will give him the opportunity to do that and to go out and express himself and hopefully make a valuable contribution to the progress of the team.

“I believe Matthew has the ability to step back up again to the SPFL in the future but in the meantime, we are delighted to have him as part of our squad and the Management Team are all really looking forward to working with him to see what he can do in the Highland League next season.”

Matthew started his full time career with Ross County in the summer of 2020, making his Premiership debut as a substitute away at Rangers on December 6th.

He was loaned to Brora Rangers for the first half of the following season, scoring 17 goals in 18 appearances for the Dudgeon Park club, including two hat-tricks.

Upon his return to Ross County at New Year, he scored a memorable, injury time equaliser against Rangers in a 3-3 draw on January 29th 2022.

He spent the first half of the next season on loan at Montrose, scoring six times in 19 appearances for the League One Gable Endies before he moved on to another loan spell in January 2023 this time at Falkirk, who he played for in the Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden.

Last season, he bagged a first half hat-trick for Ross County in a 3-1 pre-season win over us at Station Park before joining Elgin City on loan, although his time at Borough Briggs was hampered by illness. He finished the campaign back in the Highland League, this time on loan at Brechin City where he scored three times in 13 appearances for the eventual championship runners up.
