Match Report by Niamh Cowdrey

The Wee County secured a well-deserved clean sheet in this weekend’s victory over Wick Academy. Claiming all three points, County now climb to 11th in the Breedon Highland League table.

Before the match, Wayne MacKintosh marked a milestone 400 appearances for the club with a commemorative plate and an ovation from the crowd. This weekend’s game was the midfielder’s 402nd for the club.

County dominated from the opening minutes, with many early opportunities coming from the left. In the fifth minute, MacKintosh had a first attempt on goal that went just over the bar following a cross from Andrew Greig. Few minutes later, Kenny McKenzie had a strong opportunity that once again went just over the bar.

Lewis Munro, in his first league appearance this season, made a strong diving save to prevent a Wick goal in the 30th minute.

County returned to the pitch after half time even stronger than before, with an opportunity for Ben Barron in the 52nd minute being just missed. His header at the far post went just wide, though it showed Nairn’s determination to put themselves ahead.

Not long after, Greig scored County’s first of the game. Following a brilliant silky run down the left, his nifty footwork proved effective as he fired the ball into the far corner to open the scoring.

Wick pushed forward in search of an equaliser, though a deflection pushed the ball towards the post before going out.

Fortunately for Nairn, this left gaps at the back for County to find another. A second goal for County came from an individual effort from Greig down the left, with a powerful shot which found the far corner again in the 81st minute.

As the full time whistle approached, Nairn found yet another goal to extend their lead, courtesy of Matthew Wright. A low drive following a cross from the left beat the keeper at the near post.

County will next play at home in the R Davidson Highland League Cup against Banks O’Dee, on Saturday, 9th November 2024 at 3pm.
