Match Report by John Dolan
A hugely entertaining draw was served up on Wednesday night when Lossiemouth, who have made a flying start to the season, visited Station Park in the SFHL.
After a goalless first half, a Calum Mackay penalty put Nairn ahead just after the hour, but with just a few seconds left of normal time another spot kick saw the visitors draw level through Lewis McAndrew.
Nairn manager Wayne Mackintosh included himself in the starting line-up, while a Trialist was named among the Nairn substitutes.
An early chance for the visitors saw Baylee Campbell denied by Tom McHale as he burst into the right side of the box.
A Mackay delivery across the Lossie goal in 10 minutes almost produced the opener, but neither Ben Kelly nor Jake Thomson could apply the finishing touch.
A corner for the visitors saw it cleared to the edge of the box. It fell to Sam Russell, but his well-struck volley flew straight into the arms of McHale.
A fine move in 28 minutes by the home side saw Kenny McKenzie play the ball out wide to Max Ewan. His pim-point delivery found Jake Thomson, but his goal-bound header was tipped over the bar by Stuart Knight.
At the other end McHale did well to get just enough on the ball to touch Campbell’s low drive onto the post and out for a corner.
County replied with a rasping 30-yard shot from Tyler Eadie, which fizzed just past the upright.
A diving header from Mackay off a Thomson cross was well smothered by Knight and three minures before the break, McKenzie curled a shot just wide of the upright. (H-T 0-0.)
The visitors should have taken the lead five minutes after the restart. A great delivery off a free kick from Daniel Hanover fell to the feet of James Leslie, as he ghosted in at the back post, but he sent the ball past the far post.
Leslie again went close, this time with a header that was parried by McHale, before Campbell, following up, sent the losoe ball over the top.
Lossie’s Aiden Cruickshank showed some good footwork, as he cut in from the wing, breezing past a couple Nairn men as he did, but then fired wildly over the top from the edge of the area.
However, it would be the Wee County who would take the lead in 61 minutes when McKenzie was tripped in the box and Mackay stepped up to send Knight the wrong way.
There was a real let off for the home side in 79 minutess when Ryan Matheson found space down the right. Hs low delivery looked like it was going to be converted by Liam Harvey at the near post, but the Lossie substitute got the ball stuck under his feet and McHale was able to gather.
Two mintes from time and it was Nairn’s turn to go close when Brindle turned Leslie, but Knight managed to block his shot.
And as the clock began to wind down there was frantic action at both ends of the park.
Owen Loveland stole a yard on Millar Gamble, who tugged at the Lossie’s man shirt and ref Scott White adjudged it just inside the box and pointed to the spot. It was a last-man challenge, but remarkably there was no red card for Gamble. McAndrew kept a cool head as he slotted the ball home from 12 yards.
And as the game moved in to added time, Knight proved to be the hero for the Coasters when, in twice succession, he pulled off blocking savings to deny Ewan – and deny Nairn a dramatic last-gasp winner.
A point a piece in the end and with it Nairn’s three-game winless run comes to an end, while Lossiemouth move into second place in the table, just two points behind leaders Brora Rangers. Changed days, indeed, for now anyway, for the Grant Park side.
