Match Report by Niamh Cowdrey
Nairn County shared the points this weekend with Fraserburgh, following a match full of pressure and chances for both sides.
The opening minutes showed Fraserburgh’s determination to put themselves ahead early. Whilst they made consistent and frequent runs into County’s half, they were blocked by either emergency loan goalkeeper Logan Ross, or were stopped by an organised Nairn back line.
Nairn’s first big chance came in the 21st minute, following a 25-yard free kick which was taken by Andrew Greig. His shot was pushed over the bar by the Fraserburgh keeper, resulting in a corner for the Wee County – who were beginning to grow in confidence
Fraserburgh’s goal came shortly after, from their number 15, Josh Bolton. Following a clearance off the line, the ball fell to him on the edge of the box. He placed it in the top far corner, putting the visitors ahead.
Greig had a second shot from just outside the left side of the box in the 33rd minute, though he unfortunately hit the crossbar.
Fraserburgh had a final shot just before half time, courtesy of Paul Young, which was saved by Ross – who dropped to the floor to block it.
The floodlights were switched on for the second half, and an improved County team returned to the pitch.
The first big chance of the second half for Fraserburgh came in the 59th minute, as captain William West’s header went just above the bar.
Matthew Wright’s goal followed a break from a corner at the other end. The ball was crossed to him, and he skillfully brought it down before putting it past the keeper, bringing County equal.
Ben Barron looked to increase the scoring in the 70th minute, with a header that unfortunately went just wide of the far post.
A final chance for County came from Kenny McKenzie in the 72nd minute, with a shot at the near post – blocked by Joe Barbour.
County will next play away at Buckie Thistle, on Wednesday 16th October 2024 at 8pm.
