Wayne Mackintosh has today added to his Backroom Team with the return of Martin MacDonald to the club as First Team Coach nine years after ending his lengthy spell as a player at Station Park.
Martin – known more commonly as Bobo – is no stranger to Nairn County having spent 11 years at the club as a player, making 340 appearances and winning three trophies.
The former centre back has been out of the game since retiring in 2020 but is excited to return to his former club where he will link up with two ex-teammates on the Coaching Staff.
He said: “I had never really thought about getting into coaching at all, so when Wayne got in touch it came out of the blue. I liked what he had to say though and I know him really well having played together during my entire time at Nairn as a player.
“I know Brian Macleod as well and hopefully we can all form a good team – Brian and I will be there to give Wayne all the help and support he needs behind the scenes.
“I am delighted to be back at Nairn County having spent most of my playing career with the club. I am really looking forward to making a start and getting to see everyone again. We have a good squad here to work with, so it is an exciting time for me and I cannot wait to get started.”
Wayne Mackintosh added: “Bobo was one of the first names that came into my head when I was thinking about my Backroom Team. He is a really enthusiastic guy and he knows the game and the Highland League really well. I think he will bring a lot of quality to the coaching staff and we have already discussed a number of ideas for how we want to train and play next season. He was at a lot of our home games last season as a spectator, so he knows a fair bit about the squad already.
“Having done so well throughout his career as a centre-half, Bobo will be a great help to the defenders on the training pitch in improving their game and we will hopefully see the benefits of that on a Saturday.
“I am really looking forward to working with Bobo and Brian and I have a great team alongside me but I am still hoping to add to my staff before we get started with pre-season training in a few weeks’ time.”
Martin joined the club in June 2005 from Brora Rangers. In total, he played 340 times for us, meaning our Management Team has amassed over 1000 Nairn County appearances throughout their individual playing careers.
He was also utilised as a centre forward in his time at Station Park and scored a total of 37 goals. He lifted the North of Scotland Cup in his first season with us before going on to repeat that feat in 2008, earning the Man of the Match award in the final.
Martin also played in the team that lifted the Highland League Cup in 2011 and was rewarded for his service to the club with a testimonial match against Aberdeen in 2015.
He moved on to Huntly in 2016 before joining Clachnacuddin, having a brief spell at Rothes and then returning to Clach to see out his playing career.
First Team Coach Alan Geegan has now also left the club.
Alan joined us last summer from St Duthus and stepped up to support Brian Macleod during his time as interim manager in the second half of the campaign.
Chairman Kevin Reid said: “On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Alan for his service to Nairn County and all of the effort he put into the role, particularly during the challenging second half to the season we had where he went above and beyond to support Brian following Ross Tokely’s departure.
“We wish him all the best for the future and I am sure he will be not be out of the game for long and will be a great asset to his next club.”
