Following Nairn’s 4-1 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the North of Scotland Cup First Round, manager Ross Tokely reflected on the result and the past week.
Q: What did you say to the guys last Friday to provoke this response?
A: I think that we just asked them to show character, and always have a good response. I thought we played well in the first half on Friday, but the result was really disappointing. Tonight, we had a real team performance. I thought everyone played their part, and we deserved our win. We had some really good goals, and I was really happy with both halfs today rather than just one half.
Q: Where did you think the key improvements were from our game against Rothes?
A: I think we worked harder as a team. We were a bit more organised, both in and out of possession. We knew that Caley would be really good on the ball, so we worked really hard off the ball. I thought the midfield three were excellent, and our front three are probably one of the best in the league. It was really pleasing to score two goals from set pieces, and the header from Callum Maclean was excellent.
Q: We next play Turriff United, what do you expect from that game – in terms of the opposition and Nairn’s approach to the game?
A: It’s always difficult down there. They’re a good, well organised side. They’ve got off to a good start in the season, so it’ll be a difficult game. But, if we play like we can, and as they did tonight, we’ve got a great chance. We need to keep our levels up for Saturday.
Q: What has been your general view of the start of the season?
A: It’s been a mixed bag. Only picking up three points in the league is disappointing, but we’re getting the message across. It would be nice to build on our performances. It’s been a bit of a stop-start, in many ways.
