FRASERBURGH v NAIRN COUNTY

Nairn County are back on the road this weekend as they travel to face Fraserburgh in the Breedon Highland League with Brora Rangers loanee Aidan Wilson in red-hot form.
Wilson joined the club last week from the Cattachs and has scored two goals in two games including on his debut against Forres Mechanics at a wet Station Park last Wednesday.
Max Ewan also returned to Station Park this summer as he too joined from Brora Rangers as part of a deal which saw Ben Barron move the other way.
Ewan left Nairn to join the Brora in the summer of 2021 where he enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Cattachs, but he has chosen to swap the red of Brora Rangers for the black and yellow of Nairn County as he re-joined the Station Park side.
Nairn manager Wayne Mackintosh was pleased with the impact both of the new arrivals have made so far, he said: “They have both done really well. Max is a quality player, and you have seen that already, while Aidan has scored in each of the two games he has played for us.
“Neither of them have played much football over the last few months, so it will still take them a while to get fully up to speed with the rest of the squad but that will come with the number of games we have coming up.”
Despite the arrivals of Wilson and Ewan, results have been hard to come by as of late, with just one point from the last three games for Nairn.
That run includes a 1-1 draw to Keith followed by a 2-1 derby loss at home to Forres Mechanics and a 3-1 defeat to Inverurie Loco Works.
Mackintosh discussed the work being done in training to address the dip in form, he said: “We know we need to improve the way we start games, with all the goals we have conceded this season coming in the first 47 minutes of matches.
“You have to give yourself a chance going into the latter part of games, especially somewhere like Fraserburgh, which is one of the toughest away venues in the league.”
“We have been looking at a number of things in training this week,” said Mackintosh. “We played a full 11-a-side game among the squad at Station Park on Tuesday, which allowed us to try things out and see what worked and what didn’t work with a view to the games we have coming up as well as helping to integrate the newer players.”
Despite the slight dip in results, the goals haven’t dried up as Wilson scored against Forres and Inverurie since his arrival and Barron scored to help earn a point against Keith before his departure.
Attention now turns to Saturday’s opponents, Fraserburgh, who are on a good run of form.
Despite their 2-0 loss to Montrose in the Challenge Cup, also known as the KDM Evolution Trophy, the Broch are unbeaten in the league, with three wins and a draw including 7-0 and 2-0 away victories to Rothes and Forres respectively.
Former Elgin City forward Ryan Sargent has scored three goals in four games, including a brace against Forres, and striker Scott Barbour scored a hattrick against Rothes.
Fraserburgh’s defence have also held their own so far as the Broch are yet to concede in a league meeting.
Mackintosh is well aware of the challenge his side will face this Saturday, he said: “Fraserburgh have had a really good start to the season, and they have a number of dangerous players all over the pitch, such as Ryan Sargent and my old teammate, Scott Barbour.
“They are sitting joint top of the league and they will want to ensure they stay there – we know they will look for a fast start and try to get on top of us from the off but we have to be braver on the ball and strong and aggressive out of possession to stand up to that.”
Nairn will be wary of their record against their opponents with the club winless in matches against Fraserburgh until as far back as 2018 when current Clachnacuddin striker Jordan MacRae scored a hattrick for Nairn in a 3-1 victory.
Since then, Fraserburgh have had the upper hand in meetings between the two clubs including an ongoing winning run which includes a 7-0 victory at Bellslea Park last season.
