Wayne Mackintosh has concluded his first piece of on-field business since taking over as our Manager, with exciting midfielder Calum Mackay returning to the club on a new deal.
The 20-year-old was with us on a short-term agreement during the second half of last season following his release from Inverness CT and has now pledged his future to the club until 2027.
Mackintosh was delighted to land one of the first targets he identified when he took over the post at the start of the month as he looks to put in place his squad for the start of the new season on July 26th.
The Manager said: “Calum has taken his time to weigh up his options and decide what he wants to do which was wise of him and I am really pleased that he has chosen to come to us.
“When I took over as Manager, I had a conversation with him right away and made it clear to him that I was very keen for him to be a part of the squad. After our season ended, he had the opportunity to go and train with Elgin City and he had a few offers from other clubs in the Highland League as well, so for him to have chosen to sign with us for the next few seasons is a huge boost.
“I have challenged Calum to not only get involved in creating chances for our strikers – which we already know is one of his key strengths – but to regularly get in among the goals himself too. We struggled for goals from the middle of the park last season and it is something we really need to improve on – we have not really had someone contributing regularly with goals from midfield since Andrew Macleod was here. It makes such a difference if we can get midfielders and wide players into double figures or pushing to get into double figures and I would love Calum to do that next season.
“We all know what he brings to the table and he is an exciting player to watch on his day. He will give us good deliveries from set pieces and creativity in the final third from open play. He knows the club well having been with us for the second half of last season and on loan the season before that, so I am sure he will settle in right away. Myself, Brian (Macleod) and Bobo (Martin MacDonald) are all really looking forward to working with him and helping him to develop his game and improve over the next few seasons.”
Calum started his career at Inverness CT, where he made his debut against Motherwell in the League Cup in August 2022. He made a total of 16 appearances for the Caley Jags, including 10 outings last season, prior to departing in February. He then joined us for the second time, with his first spell coming on loan from October 2023 until the end of the 2023/24 season, when he made 23 appearances and scored twice. Last season saw him make 11 appearances for us, scoring the winner in the home victory over Huntly in March.
